I personally love to read interesting lore, like how you mentioned unique items in Baldur's Gate have their own special history, but I hate it when the unoriginal bile is forced upon me. If it's charming and informs the gameplay (I'm thinking of the totally skippable cut-scene at the opening of Little Big Planet), then that's usually good too. I don't read quest text in WoW because it's mostly awful. I don't need to read the back story on why I need to collect 12 Bear Hides for Sir Nurblestorf the lord of Bloodaxe Valley or whatever.
