Friday Links: Certain Death Edition

Friday Links: Certain Death EditionThis has to be the worst job in the world. My hands get sweaty just watching the video. There must be some visual reaction – I wonder how that was trained into people despite the fact that everybody who negatively experiences a massive fall is probably dead.

Keep reading for the snap diva, how to be alone and the most dangerous colleges (hint: It’s Tufts).

Videogame Links

Interesting

Rock Paper Shotgun rewrites game endings. Most of them are mediocre at best, but the System Shock 2 rewitten ending at the bottom would have been an instant classic.

I don’t know if you’ve heard of this game Minecraft but it’s a cult phenomenon. People create the damnedest things. If you give people the ultimate sandbox they can be sucked in and lost forever.

We know that videogames help hand eye coordination. Apparently they also help people to make faster decisions that are still correct. I attribute all my talent in life to videogames; they’ve gotten me to where I am today with my gold house and  my rocket car.

Dead Space 2 multiplayer. They are clearly taking the Left 4 Dead concept and applying it to Dead Space. This can only be a good thing.

Left 4 Dead Space? Can't wait. Falcon punch!

Google does tech talks occasionally. Sometimes they’re about serious topics. Sometimes they’re about Starcraft E-Sports. They really should have had Day9 do this one though instead of HD who is embarrassingly unprepared.

Funny

Acts of Gord is a website of funny anecdotes from the clerk at a video game rental shop. It takes some exploration but it’s a good time.

I have brought great shame to my family

Apparently in-game ads do work. Who knew? There needs to be an additional revenue stream for videogame development; maybe this is a way to get it without just charging the consumer more.

Once again, internet, the videogame offering this week is paltry. I am more than a little disappointed.

Non-Videogame Links

Interesting

Ken Block is an incredible rally car driver with a video series called Gymkhana. I don’t really know why it’s called that. Still – it’s incredible to watch. I can barely parallel park.

This is Ken Block's commute to work

Iron Man played on a tesla guitar. Impressive. Does it stack up to the Moog guitar though? Moog had a solid breakthrough with their keyboard. One can hope that the guitar is just as epic.

Most popular terms for soda in the United States. Obviously, based on the caption to this link, the correct term is ’soda.’ Hot man juice though is a close second, at least in some parts of the country.

Possible air conditioner that uses 90% less power than what we have at the moment? Is my dream of air conditioned streets for slightly higher local tax finally coming true?

How to be alone. It’s nice when it’s voluntary, I guess.

Why everybody should visit National Parks: a photo series. I’ve been to some of these. Hopefully the rest stick around long enough that I can take a look.

The most dangerous colleges in the world. You’ll notice that Tufts is at the top of the list. Represent.

Too bad this is staged instead of them actually just having their Jeep break down and being forced to rebuild it in under 5 minutes. Still fairly impressive. It takes me about 5 minutes to rebuild my mechanical pencils.

Giant cave pictures from Borneo. I’m still hoping they find some advanced civilization down there. They just have to dig a little deeper.

Must go deeper. They're down there somewhere, I'm telling you.

Funny

David Hasselhoff has embraced his stature in the community, much like Billiam Shatner. This can only be a good thing.

The new moonwalking internet meme pleases me. Epic skateboarding moonwalk. Quite random, though. This whole week has been random.

He-Man does a fine cover of Four Non-Blondes. I prefer the original slightly more, though.

By the power of Greyskull!

By the power of Greyskull!

A snapping lesson, from the snap diva.

This is why the 49ers aren’t going to be good this year; the objective is to catch the ball.

Al Qaeda almost falls for it. Nice try, Twitter.

Rafting. Fuck yeah. I really hope there is an opportunity for me to finally do this soon. Looks like a good time. Unless you’re that kid on the right. Of course … it could be better. Kid on the right: still unimpressed.

Why you feel smarter after having a few drinks. Never watched this one but apparently it was kind of popular.

I have brought great shame to my family

Fun fact: tigers can vertically leap up to 25 feet. This photo is taken from only halfway through the jump. Good times.

The new top 10 hit is called ‘Being a Dickhead is Cool.’ A little too Euro for me. I’m not sure if it’s going to catch on.

Good instincts. Or maybe they were all crushed just off camera. Hard to tell.

No wonder nobody can tell where the military budget is being spent. They hide it all with these damn powerpoints.

It’s always good to expand the vernacular. Ambrodexterity, however, goes into the shame section.

Always be prepared. Also notice the parachute and harness he is wearing. When the zombie apocalypse comes, I want this guy on my team.

You know who else is always prepared? That's right - Vin Diesel

There are a few things that everybody needs: food, shelter and a $400 Ferrari hairdryer.

Sometimes the guard rail just comes out of nowhere. Nothing he could have done.

That’s all for this week. Did I miss anything? Hit up the comments!

  • What’s this all about?

My name is Luke Stillman and Backhand of Justice is my take on all things videogame. I've been inspecting ventilation shafts, liberating princesses and dying of dysentery since my first game in 1988. Stay a while and listen.
