Friday Links: Giant Shark OMG! Edition

This week’s top link comes courtesy of Newgrounds Games. While some might call a simulation of the natural hunting tactics Great White Sharks use against jumbo jets comical, to me it’s deadly serious. People have grown far too casual about the shark aviation menace, and only through constant vigilance will we prevail.
Even if you’ve flown with us before, you should watch the new safety video as the FAA has implemented new anti-shark contingency information. God willing we will be the first to successfully land in Miami since the Sharkpocalypse™
Continue reading for pumpkin carving contests, kite surfing and the most 90’s photo in the world.

Interesting
Little known fact: Bowser was a last minute substitution into the Mario Games. Miyamoto was never able to get the Boomer physics quite right, a failing that has now been remedied.
Now going on the box art for the Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition is that the night vision goggles are also good for a ‘pervy night out.’ PNO: it’s the normal mapping of 2009!
While there has not exactly been a Citizen Kane of videogame movies (yet), the World of Warcraft film now has the writer of Saving Private Ryan attached to it.
Tripwire refutes Randy Pitchford’s claim that Valve is exploiting small developers with Steam. He goes on to say ‘Randy Pitchford is just a greedy money grubbing bastard.’

Compare this image to the Deathwing sculpture gallery! The only thing more impressive would be if it was made solely from cutlery. Oh wait, that's below.
Proving once and for all that if the entire subscriber base of World of Warcraft banded together we’d finally have hovercars and cure AIDS, here’s a Deathwing sculpture gallery.
When contacted to counter Tripwire, Pitchford instead details how games are like magic, and how he used to be an amateur magician. He then threw a smoke bomb at his feet and started cackling but tripped over the futon in his attempt to ‘disappear.’ His condition has been upgraded to good from stable.
The Left4Dead2 boycott is officially over, saying ‘mission accomplished.’ Unfortunately, after being forced to purchase an expansion pack for full retail price, they couldn’t afford a flight suit or aircraft carrier.
Infinity Ward thanks other developers who inspired them during their credits. Coming 2011: Uncharted 3 w/ Master Chief
Miyamoto’s bizarre secret hobby: measuring and weighing stuff?
Iowa State study on how videogames cause ADD. What they didn’t factor in was … ooh SQUIRREL!
Left4Dead baby mobile. While cool, I’m not sure it’s best to expose children to the smoker until they’re at least 7.
Timbaland is so serious about Beaterator being a real beat boxing tool that he created some of his new songs in it.
Virtual maze for lab mouse research created using Quake II. Well played, sir.
Funny
The Globe & Mail site: another in a long line of sites in which the Contra code works. Up up down down left right left right B A enter shift+space to bring up the console. Is there nothing this code can’t do?

Probably the best use of the contra code. ESPN for the win.
I guess Game Informer didn’t give Sega the review scores they were quite hoping for.
I Have Brought Great Shame to my Family
Swedish videogame player goes berserk and stabs a passer-by on the street after his network connection is dropped. I thought Scandinavia was supposed to have good coverage? Maybe this will be a valuable call to arms for the network companies.
Kid lit on fire by a friend for stiffing him on a $40 videogame. The lesson here? Stealing is wrong.
German game burning. Shouldn’t they only be burning Jewish games? Too soon?

Interesting
The most extreme kiteboarder in the world. Although I have to admit, just like balloon boy I was partially cheering for him to bite it.
Following the great orbital trash hysteria of 2008, the Germans have once again proved their quality. They plan to unleash a blitzkrieg on space trash. When the rogue satellite hunters came for me, there was nobody left to speak out.

Blitzkrieg: Spanish for 'The Krieg'
Another of those crossover links, I thought this might better serve the non-videogame crowd. Games that look like work programs.
The most ridiculous 9-year-old hockey goal ever. You have to respect that kind of moxy. 9 times out of 10 you screw up that kind of showboating and end up embarrassing yourself.
Is it wrong that this is the most impressive thing I’ve seen all week? A dragon sculpture made entirely from plastic utensils.
This is what I use to pop round the corner to Tesco’s.
Second in deliciousness only to the Mega Egg are these Super Mario Cupcakes.
Despite this being videogame related, I thought I’d put it down here as pumpkins are delicious. And the carving skills here are fairly impressive.
Funny
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool. The most 90’s picture in the world.
I Have Brought Great Shame to my Family
This might be a new low, even for me.
That’s about it for this week. A little too much ‘interesting‘ and not enough ‘great shame‘ for my tastes. That is something I will make sure to remedy in the future and I’ve been thinking about adding a NSFA ‘not safe for anybody’ section.
If you have something good from the last week that I missed, throw it in the comments!
Sharks don’t even have to leap out of the water — they just walk onto the plane and go to First Class holding their Goldman Sachs briefcases full of bonus cash.
