Friday Links: Mad Science EditionEpic. I don’t even know what this is, but it’s amazing. AMAZING. You want your kid to be a scientist when he/she/it grows up? Show them this photo series. Retroactive Nobel prize for awesomeness.

Keep reading for GDC: the party of the decade, Office 2010: The Movie and a double feature of whale related action. Do I mean pictures of whales, or real ‘whale on whale action?’ Only one way to find out …

Interesting

Rumor that the next Blizzard MMO is going to be a MMOFPS in the style of Borderlands. This would validate their comments that it’s not going to compete with WoW. I’ll be interested to see whether they go for a fantasy game or a technological shooter; Post apocalyptic is out post Borderlands.

Teaching through videogames – I want to be supportive but I figure the old methods are probably the best way. All these kids are screwed.

This week’s Rockstar Studios controversy. Employees say their quality of life is shit and Red Dead Redemption is going to be balls (just balls, not ‘the balls’). Management responds saying ‘oh hi here is some PR crap, please don’t be mad at us.’

Gordon Freeman, Private Eye.

Meet the other three horsemen of the apocalypse, no doubt integrated in some way to the Darksiders sequel. Interesting that one appears to be a woman? I am not that familiar with the fiction but unexpected.

Rumors of a fifth horseman of the apocalypse have surfaced. Here is an artist's visualization

Website with all old Sega Genesis / NES games emulated, along with a host of other stuff. Procrastination, thy name is The Smart Ass.

Funny

Mega64 gets crazy about GDC. BE THERE!

And now a double feature of epic clothing: videogame sweaters part 1 and the return, part deux.

James Cameron says to suck it, critics of Avatar. You think Avatar stuff looks like Halo? Oh, you mean space marines, a concept invented by James Cameron? Just quiet down, internet 15 year olds.

New movies as old videogame posters.

Martin Sheen did the voice of one of the characters in Mass Effect 2. He was told he’d have to read each line in several different ways as ‘players might disagree with / talk back to his character.’ He said emphatically: ‘nobody talks back to me.’ And that’s that.

I think I’d read this. In fact, this might be the only way for Electronic Arts to turn themselves around.

I have brought great shame to my family

Hello Kitty Online. Aw shit, get your towels ready, it’s about to go down. We running this. Let’s go.

Hello Kitty, so hot right now, Hello Kitty

Plants vs. Zombies snow sculptures. Are these better than the barfing jack-o-lanterns? I’m not sure.

I was ok with Pokemon Gold / Silver. At least that name was fairly straightforward and made sense. Now we have Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, and we’ve seen Pearl and other crap. Soon we’ll haev Pokemon Pewter and PeatMaster Pokemon. Give it a rest Nintendo. Reboot time.

First person Tetris. Sounded amazing … until I realized they just made a shit version that isn’t at all what it sounds like. Wanted you all to be as disappointed with it as I am.

Interesting

Great deforestation video about unchopping a tree. More amazing to me when thinking about the message in the video isn’t how fast we’re chopping down trees, but just how big the rainforests must be for them to still exist at all.

Ridiculous image of surfers at Teahupoo … can you imagine being out there, especially when you realize the coral is 4 meters under the surface? Talk about a death trap.

Study that daydreaming and down-time is healthy. Goes along with the articles I’ve seen in the past few weeks that boredom is a good and required thing, and constant stimulation is unhealthy.

Self-control is contagious. Just like being obese is contagious, as we found out. I guess whatever your peer group is doing … people are lemmings.

Incredible dolphin mud ring fishing. Fish have yet again embarrassed themselves terribly.

I'm riding on a dolphin doing flips and shit

Funny

*Golf Clap* … well done internet. Well done.

Office 2010: The Movie. While I don’t think I’d actually see this, I can’t say it would be the worst film released this year. Which is terrifying.

Not the first thing you want to see upon entering the park. I love the way there’s a standard sign for this.

Uh … FedEx? What exactly was the plan here?

Man fixes plane attacked by bear with duct tape. Tell me again why airlines are going bankrupt with maintenance costs?

I have brought great shame to my family

I can’t tell if this is a good or bad thing if you’re on a whale watch. Sure, you get to see a whale from up close, but you have to realize the whale is trying to kill you. From hell’s heart I stab at thee!

Oh, this old thing? Don’t mind him. I’ll just slide the blanket back down.

I googled Cat and Pig ... this is the result. Conclusion: Either Google, or the sculptor of this monstrosity is unaware of what a pig looks like

Oxford Police get in trouble for spending time while on duty sledding … on riot shields.

Amp up your laser pointer into a death beam! I’m sure pilots will love this.

Well, it’s the  start of a long weekend today, so your next installment will come on Tuesday. What, you thought I was going to do stuff while *not* at work? Outrageous.

  • What’s this all about?

My name is Luke Stillman and Backhand of Justice is my take on all things videogame. I've been inspecting ventilation shafts, liberating princesses and dying of dysentery since my first game in 1988. Stay a while and listen.
